Showcase helps to build visibility - Jun '04 |
| |
 |
By Tom Harrison
Music Reporter
The Province - June 17, 2004
This started on the naive assumption that somebody was trying to revive a dying club scene.
Like Rumbletone, Eargasm and a few other companies, Freedom to Groove was putting on quality shows and promoting them. In time, a brand loyalty would develop as word of mouth told the public that a Freedom to Groove-produced gig was a guarantee of a good time.
It turns out that producing club gigs is just a part of what Freedom to Groove does, and the least profitable.
"We still have to be out there in the real world," says Su Bailey, who formed Freedom To Groove with Holly Kemp five years ago. Bailey and Kemp believe that music still has to be viable. Live music has to be experienced to be marketable. That's what Freedom to Groove does. It markets music. It also designs and develops websites, runs a store for its clients, helps set up tours, customizes e-commerce setup for existing sites, manages fan clubs, and more. Their tool is the internet.
"It's proven to be effective," Says Kemp.
"The thing about the Internet is that you can turn on a dime once you have the information you need," says Bailey.
Freedom to Groove's clients include musicians Jack Tripper, Bocephus King, Colin James, Ox, The Hermit, Kia Kadiri, instrument store Not just Another Music Store and label Maximum Jazz.
For James, Freedom created an interactive website; for Bocephus King, it built on his popularity in Italy and Holland; for Ox (Mark Browning), it helped promote a successful U.K. tour.
Recently, Freedom to Groove hired on singer Linda McRae to help producer Paul Mercs promote his Merle Haggard tour. The company also will co-ordinate a showcase at North by Northeast by CoStar, a Norwegian group based in England.
"No one knows who they are," Bailey says. "So what's the point of coming to showcase at North by Northeast?"
"A band from Norway, based in the U.K., with a U.S.label in Connecticut, appearing in Toronto," says Kemp. Freedom to Groove organized and promoted everything for CoStar thousands of miles away from its office on Granville Island. "And we've never laid our eyes on them."
To be visible, Freedom to Groove has put on shows to build its client list.
"They are artists we work with or we want to work with," says Kemp of the eight dates the company has done at the Railway so far. "And these shows are completely different. There's consistency of quality and an element of surprise."

Save Canadian Music - May '04 |
| |
On March 31st, 2005, FACTOR's contract with the Department of Canadian Heritage expires. Effectively, this means that the current Government of Canada has announced its intention to stop its investment in the Canadian Music Industry. In the 2002/03 budget year, this investment was almost $14 Million dollars.
A group of industry professionals have banded together to take action and try to convince the government that removing their support would be a big mistake. This task may be difficult but if we all do what we can, it is sure to make a difference. Please visit www.savecanadianmusic.com to learn more and find out what you can do to help keep FACTOR and Canadian music itself alive.

New Fan Club Manager Launched - Apr '04 |
| |
Freedom to Groove is proud to announce that the new Fan Club Manager has been launched. After many hours of brainstorming and talking to our artists and managers we have come up with many new features that will make fan club mail outs easier than ever.
Some of the new features that have been added include;
an HTML editor (now you can send out HTML e-mails without having to type out all of that HTML code)
an archive area (so that you can get at your previously sent messages, edit them and send them as reminders without having to type them out again)
an e-mail open rate checker (see who opens your e-mails and who just deletes them)
mailing list group organization (organize your mailing list into different groups like press, or east coast / west coast, so that you can target certain people for special events)
This mailing list program is one of the most configurable and easy to use ones out there. It is an amazing tool for any artist and is just one of the many advantages that Freedom to Groove offers it's artists over other online development companies.
